Fini Konstat

Fini Konstat and her family were thrown out of their apartment in Vienna, Austria after the Anschluss with Nazi Germany in March 1938. Fini and her mother went into hiding in a room in Vienna while her father was taken by the Nazis. He was able to jump out of the back of the truck and reunited with his family. In 1939, Konstat and her parents left Vienna for Istambul, Turkey, the birthplace of Konstat's mother. They then went to Baghdad and Basra, Iraq, after which that they took a train to Bombay, India where they lived for two years. Finally, they joined a Polish group fleeing through Afghanistan on their way to the United States via Australia. Unable to disembark in California, Konstat's family continued on to León, Guanajuato in Mexico, where they arrived in 1943. Konstat married in 1947 and had three children, Manuel, Rene and Denise, who later emigrated to the United States.
