Born: Lily Lenz
Vienna, Austria
October 11, 1920
Lily Stark was the youngest child of her Romanian father and Russian mother. After her father died as a result of injuries he received fighting for Austria in World War I (1914-1918), her mother sold candies and rented spare rooms in order to support her children. Lily remembered how her family “was helped by the local Jewish organizations.” In May 1938 she moved to Brussels, Belgium where her older brother worked as a traveling salesman. There she met her husband Siegfried (Fred) Stark, a diamond setter. They married in 1940 and escaped the next year to Cuba where their son George was born in 1944. In 1961 the Starks moved to Paris where they lived until moving to Houston in 1985.
