Eugenia Gwozds

Born: Eugenia Wein
Kraków, Poland
August 20, 1924

After the Nazi invasion of Poland in September 1939, Eugenia Gwozds’s family was thrown out of their residence and all their belongings were confiscated. In 1941,  Eugenia was sent to a ghetto where she worked in a mattress factory. While in the ghetto, Gwozds married her husband Feliks. The situation grew more drastic in 1943, as many people were killed and sent to killing centers. Eugenia and her family were transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau where Gwozds was undressed, deloused and received a tattoo number. She was the only member of her family to survive the Holocaust.

After the war Gwozds returned to Kraków and reunited with her husband Feliks, who had survived Dachau. They came to the United States in 1951, first arriving in Fort Worth before settling in Corpus Christi, Texas.
