Betty Wolf was born in the town of Pułtusk, Poland where her father operated automobile and real estate ventures while her mother took care of Wolf and her four siblings. Wolf’s father had immigrated to Houston when World War II began in September 1939.

Unable to acquire the necessary visas in time to join her father in the United States, 11-year-old Betty fled with her mother and siblings eastward toward the Soviet Union. For the next six years, they survived in Siberia off her mother’s construction labor. At the end of the war, the family returned to central Europe. They lived in displaced persons camps for about a year before joining Wolf’s father in the United States in May 1947.
