John Horst Schindler was a high school student in Berlin, Germany when World War II began on September 1, 1939. In February 1943, Schindler was imprisoned in the Buna subcamp of Auschwitz and was transported to the main Auschwitz-Birkenau complex that March. He survived in the camp for almost two years before being liberated by the Soviet army in January 1945. Schindler lived in the Czech Republic and Munich, Germany before immigrating to the United States on January 16, 1947.
