January 24, 1938
Theo Meicler was born on January 24, 1938 in Brussels, Belgium where his father worked as a furniture manufacturer. His mother contributed to the business as a secretary and bookkeeper.
Meicler was only two years old when German forces occupied Belgium in May 1940. In December 1942, Theo’s father was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Buchenwald and Auschwitz. Meicler’s mother arranged for herself and her two sons to go into hiding. Separated from his family, Theo spent most of the war in various locations around Lasne, a town southeast of Brussels. He remembered seeing British tanks entering Belgium to liberate the country in September 1944.
In 1947 Meicler was reunited with his mother and brother in Brussels. He lived with his uncle in France for a few years and when he was 17 he moved to Israel. Theo immigrated to Houston in 1968.
